Five Essential Habits for Healthy Christian Living

Aug 30, 2025

Whether you’ve recently become a Christian, or never really got off to a solid start, here are five practices that will help you build a strong foundation. The key is making them regular habits—some daily, others weekly. Consistency matters more than perfection.

Daily time in God's Word. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) When everything around you feels uncertain or confusing, God's Word provides clarity and truth. Even five minutes a day makes a difference. The YouVersion Bible app offers multiple free daily reading plans.

Daily prayer. “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:8) Prayer doesn't have to be formal or complicated—it's just talking honestly with God. Thank him for good things, ask for help with challenges, and share what's on your heart. The YouVersion app offers daily prayer plans alongside its Bible reading plans.

Weekly church attendance. “Do not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” (Hebrews 10:25) When we come to faith, God makes us his children. That makes us brothers and sisters of other believers. Meeting together weekly for worship, learning, and encouragement helps you grow in ways you can't on your own.

Weekly connection in authentic community. “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11) Large gatherings are good opportunities to hear messages and worship together. God also wants his people to gather together regularly in small groups where everyone knows one other, listens to one another, and cares for one another’s needs.

Wise media choices. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2) What you consume shapes how you think. If you're spending time in God's Word but hours scrolling through negativity, guess which one will have more influence? There are thousands of Christian ministries sharing edifying content online.
